Community Involvement

 Christmas Food and Toy Drive – Each year during the Christmas season Arthur Murray Coquitlam donates hundreds of pounds of food and additional gifts to the Food Bank at SHARE Services Society.  Our students are so generous with the bags and boxes of food and toys that they bring and the studio adds to the pile, too.  Our Christmas 2018 total was 885 pounds (our largest so far was in 2012 with 1002 pounds)! The whole studio at Arthur Murray Coquitlam has been built to the highest electrical use standards of 2014 for our area.  All the lighting is dimmable LED, which draws the smallest amount of power possible.  Our main ballroom bulbs are 20 watt and deliver 1600 lumens of warm 2700K light while using at least 82% less energy than incandescent bulbs.  The seating area has 12 watt bulbs with 800 lumens.  The result is a brightly lit studio with minimal power drain. One might be surprised at how much garbage a dance studio can generate.  We have a large active student body with 3 often well-attended practice parties, 10+ group classes and a full slate of private lessons throughout the week.  These, along with the additional special events we hold in-house, can create a lot of waste. We have recycling options for paper, plastics, styrofoam, and aluminum.  Cold and hot take-out drink cups, plastic shopping bags, rinsed take-out containers and bags all go in our recycling and are diligently sorted by us for the appropriate recycling facility. Arthur Murray Coquitlam has a long standing relationship with the Crossroads Hospice Society of the Tri-Cities.   This organization provides end-of-life care to those who need it and have been doing so with since its inception in 1988. Our association with Crossroads began  when we were approached in 2009 by Dee Pary, then our ad rep for the Tri-City News, who is very passionate about the Crossroads Hospice and the work that they do.  She had a vision for getting well-known local personalities involved if we could deliver the dancing know-how.  “Dancing with Our Stars” Tri-Cities edition was launched.  Another Dancing With Our Stars ran in 2011.
